Making Big Life Decisions with Confidence and Faith

Life in your twenties is full of big decisions—choosing a career, moving to a new city, navigating relationships, and figuring out what’s next. These choices can feel overwhelming, and the fear of making the wrong decision can sometimes lead to indecision. But as followers of Christ, we don’t have to figure it out alone. God invites us to seek Him in every decision, big or small, and trust that He will guide our steps.

1. Seek God First

When faced with a big decision, the first step is to bring it to God. Scripture reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Bringing something to God means intentionally seeking Him, including immersing yourself in His Word and prayer. Set aside time to pray and be still before Him, asking for wisdom and discernment. Write down your thoughts and the things you feel God is showing you. Seek out Scripture that speaks to your situation, and reflect on how God has led you in the past. Sometimes, bringing something to God also means surrendering your own desires and being open to where He is leading, even if it’s unexpected.

2. Gain Wise Counsel

You’re not meant to make decisions alone. Proverbs 15:22 says, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Seek out mentors, pastors, trusted friends, and family members who know you well and are grounded in faith. Their perspectives and experiences can help you see things more clearly and affirm what God is placing on your heart.

3. Pay Attention to Peace (or Lack of It)

God often uses peace—or a lack of it—as a way to guide us. If a decision fills you with anxiety, unrest, or confusion, it may be worth pausing to reassess. On the other hand, if you feel a deep, lasting peace even when the path ahead is uncertain, that may be confirmation that you’re moving in the right direction.

4. Take a Step of Faith

Sometimes, we wait for absolute certainty before making a move, but faith requires action. If you’ve prayed, sought wise counsel, and feel God leading you, the next thing to do may be moving forward through action. Even if you don’t have the full picture, trust that God will guide you and redirect you if needed. Remember, God is more concerned with your heart and trust in Him than with making a ‘perfect’ decision.

5. Trust That God Redeems Every Path

One of the biggest fears in decision-making is getting it wrong. This can be especially daunting in your twenties, when there are a lot of "big life decisions" to make. The good news is that God is sovereign—He can redeem any choice and use it for His glory. Even if you take a detour, God is still with you, leading you back to Him. What matters most is your heart in the decision-making process. If you are genuinely seeking Him, leaning into prayer, and desiring His will above all else, He will honor that. God is not waiting to punish you for making the 'wrong' choice—He is a loving Father who guides, corrects, and redirects us when needed. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.
