3 Practical Ways to Deepen Your Prayer Life
Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we connect with God, yet many young adults (and people in general) struggle to make it a consistent and meaningful part of their daily lives. Between busy schedules, distractions, and uncertainty about what to say, it’s easy for prayer to feel like an afterthought or feel overwhelming and intimidating. But prayer is meant to be more than just a routine—it’s an opportunity to draw closer to God, align our hearts with His, and experience His presence in a real way. If you’re looking to strengthen your prayer life, here are three practical ways to go deeper!
1. Set a Consistent Time and Place
One of the simplest ways to build a stronger prayer life is by setting a specific time and place to pray. Just like any important relationship, intentional time together matters. Whether it’s first thing in the morning, during a lunch break, or before bed, choose a time that works for you and show up day after day.
Find a quiet place where you can focus—this could be your bedroom, a park, a coffee shop, or even a designated prayer room complete with your favorite comfy chair. The key is consistency. Over time, setting aside this intentional space for prayer will help you develop a rhythm that makes spending time with God a natural part of your day.
2. Pray Scripture Back to God
Sometimes, we struggle with what to say in prayer. One of the most powerful ways to overcome this is by praying Scripture. God’s Word is filled with promises, wisdom, and truth that we can use to shape our prayers. When you’re unsure how to pray, open your Bible and use passages as a guide. For example:
When you need peace: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God”* (Philippians 4:6). “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3).
What you could say in prayer: God, I am coming to you because I know that I can bring you my anxiety and my honest thoughts, and you are a God who brings peace. I need your peace right now, and I am trying to trust you.”
When seeking God’s will: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
What you could say in prayer: Lord, help me to submit to you and help me to not lean on my own understanding. Make my paths straight, and help me honor you.
When feeling weary: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
What you could say in prayer: God, I am feeling weary and burdened today. I need your rest. My heart is breaking because of _____, and I know you are close to me even in this moment.”
By incorporating Scripture into your prayers, you not only align your heart with God’s truth but also grow in confidence, and you see more of who God is and His promises in your day to day.
3. Keep a Prayer Journal
Writing down your prayers can be a powerful way to see God’s faithfulness over time. A prayer journal allows you to record your conversations with God, reflect on what He’s teaching you, and track answered prayers. Here are some ways you could use a prayer journal:
Write out your prayers as if you’re writing a letter to God.
Record specific requests and date them so you can look back and see how God has moved.
Write down Scriptures that speak to what you’re praying about, or write down Scriptures that pop into your mind as you are praying.
Jot down moments of gratitude and ways you’ve seen God at work in your life.
A prayer journal serves as a tangible reminder that God hears and responds, even when answers don’t come right away, or if the answers are different than what you wanted them to be.
