Stay in Your Lane: God Has a Plan for You

It happens fast—you’re scrolling through Instagram or TikTok, and suddenly, it feels like everyone else is thriving. The comparison hits hard. They’ve got the job, the relationship, the house, the life you’ve been praying for. And you’re left wondering, “Why not me? Why not now?”

If you’ve felt this way, you're not alone.

In John 21, Jesus tells Peter the kind of life he would live—a calling that wasn’t easy. Peter’s immediate response? He turns, sees John, and asks, “Lord, what about him?” (John 21:21) Jesus replies, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” (John 21:22, NIV)

In other words: don’t compare the path God has for you against the path He has for someone else. Stay in your lane.

Comparison kills contentment.

It’s nearly impossible to be at peace with your own life when you’re constantly measuring it against someone else’s. But Jesus doesn’t call you to their journey—He calls you to your own. And in that calling, there is deep, sustaining peace. Even when you encounter feelings of being behind or not where you want to be.

Paul reminds us of this in Philippians 4:11-12: “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances... I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation...” What’s the secret? Trusting that God knows what He’s doing. In this moment. In this time of your life.

Contentment isn’t settling—it’s surrendering to His timing. It’s believing that your current season, even with its waiting and wondering, isn’t wasted. It’s knowing God is working in it, through it, and around it. So if you're tempted to speed ahead or veer off track today—pause. Take a deep breath. Ask God to help you be content with where He has you, even as you trust Him for what’s ahead.

Here’s your encouragement for today:
You don’t need to chase someone else’s life to find purpose. Stay in your lane. Choose contentment. Trust that God has good plans for you.

If you’re struggling with contentment or comparison, take a moment today to pray for peace in your heart. Ask God to help you focus on His unique plan for your life.
