When You Don’t Know What to Do…

Have you ever found yourself staring at two (or more) good options, praying for a clear sign… and getting silence?

Maybe you’re deciding between two job offers, or wondering if you should stay in a relationship, or you’re feeling unsure if it's time to step into something new. These moments can feel heavy, and it's easy to get stuck in fear—afraid of making the “wrong” choice.

But here’s some encouragement even in the unknown: God cares more about your heart in the decision than He does about which door you walk through.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

God doesn’t always give us a neon sign or audible voice. Often, He invites us to trust—step by step. So how do we actively trust him, even when we long to hear the clear decision to make? If this resonates with you, don’t worry or be discouraged. You’re not alone. Here are 3 ways you can continue on the path ahead, even in the unknown:

3 Encouragements When You’re Unsure What to Do:

1. Keep Showing Up in Prayer: Even when it feels quiet, keep bringing your heart before God. You don’t need fancy words—just honesty. Tell Him your fears, hopes, and questions. God is not put off by your wrestling; He meets you in it.

2. Get Rooted in Scripture: Sometimes God speaks through His Word more clearly than anything else. Open your Bible and ask Him to lead you. If you don’t know where to start, you could begin with James 1 (on wisdom) or Psalm 25 (a prayer for guidance).

3. Invite Wise Voices In: You don’t have to decide alone. Talk with a mentor, pastor, or someone whose faith you respect. God often speaks through community.

Friends, here’s the good news in decision-making: even if you take a “detour,” you can rest in the truth that God is still with you in it. He hasn’t abandoned you for a decision that felt right in the moment but could’ve been modified with hindsight. If your heart is truly seeking Him, He’ll guide you—even if the path isn’t straight. The goal isn’t perfection or perfectly clear decisions from an audible voice of God—it’s faithful dependence.

Psalm 32:8 says,

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.”

You’re not alone. You’re not failing. You’re just in the middle of the story—and God is walking with you.
